Date & Time

Selected Sessions:

Description
Presented by: Jennie Pasquarella, Melanie Nguyen, Joanne Kalas Join the Seattle Clemency Project, the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Washington (VABAW), and the Stritmatter Law Firm for a community-centered presentation on how to represent Southeast Asian immigrants in clemency cases. Many of these clients—often refugees or longtime lawful permanent residents—now face removal orders stemming from decades-old criminal convictions, amid an increasingly punitive immigration climate. This presentation will focus on using clemency as a powerful tool to protect individuals from deportation and promote restorative justice. Open to attorneys, legal professionals, law students, paralegals, and interested community members, this session will provide a practical introduction to clemency representation in Washington State. Presenters will walk through the petition process and offer guidance on crafting persuasive mitigation narratives rooted in cultural understanding and lived experience. While anyone can represent a client in a clemency matter, a background in law is helpful and will be supported through mentorship and resource sharing. Attendees will leave empowered to advocate for justice and join a broader movement to protect Southeast Asian communities from the devastating impact of deportation.
